POSITIVE TALK... with Linda |

IT’S A NEW YEAR! The last two years, while having great moments, has been a challenge. In 1999 the talk was about Y2K. It was supposed to happen at midnight January 1, 2000. As the clock struck midnight and nothing happened the talk turned to 2001 and the “real” Y2K and the threat of a computer shut down. Neither year resulted in the kind of detriment to our computer systems that were feared by many. We overcame Y2K and faced the challenges of a new millennium head on. The economy was booming, unemployment was down and the future looked ever so bright. Then came September 11, 2001 and our entire world changed. Gone is the sense of security we once took for granted. As we continue to search for the answer to the question “why” we find ourselves engaged in a war. The fact that it is deemed necessary does not eliminate the overwhelming sadness at the destruction and loss of life war produces. So here we are about to embark upon another year. Just 2 years into the new millennium and we are uncertain about what the rest of the millennium holds for us. I feel it is my responsibility to instill hope and inspire positive change. I have found that my responsibility to myself, my family, and my clients have changed over the past year. I still believe we have a hopeful future and the Country will rebound from this tragedy as it has from many tragedies before. But, I also believe each of us must ask ourselves some very important questions. It is not business as usual. For those of us who experienced the devastation of the terrorist attacks and the war that pursued, must make a commitment to generations to come that we will do everything in our power to make sure that this never happens again. So some very important questions are—How do we insure that this never happens again? How do we combat hate and violence? They are opposite sides of the same coin. How do we assure our children and grand children that they are safe from terrorism at home and abroad? Can we assure them of that kind of peace? What will it take to change a violent, hate filled, destructive influence into one of love, kindness and an appreciation of human life? How do we disseminate the message of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as a way of life, not just for this country but for the world? Or, should we just let other countries live as they please, even when civil rights are being violated? Can we convince other countries that we are legitimately concerned about their welfare? Are we legitimately concerned about their welfare? I know these are some tuff questions. I realize there are no easy answers. But, I hope they have motivated you to think. Think about what this world would be like if all man kind could live in peace, if poverty was eliminated, if a child never went to bed hungry, and if all families could educate their children. Think about what it would mean to you and your family if there were no wars, no hatred, no violence. Can we even imagine a world like that? Probably not, and that is the sad part. Sad because we have everything we need to be happy and have a peaceful, loving existence. But greed and intolerance gets in the way. But, because I am a dreamer, I have a dream for the world. I see a world where children can play safely in the streets. Where every child can get a good education and have a fair chance at a successful life. I see a world where people are not judged by what they have, but by whom they are. I see a world where people are not divided by, but are brought together by their beliefs, and diversity is not only appreciated but also encouraged. I see a world where working hard is rewarded and hard work is encouraged. I see a world where there is peace on earth, good will to men, women and children and happiness abounds. I know it’s a dream, but dreams do come true, especially if you BELIEVE in them and you are willing to spend your life working on them. Happy New Year—Happy New YOU! |
