Key Concepts About Planning In June I wrote an article entitled The Four P’s of Personal Power. I gave you four basic requirements for becoming a master and increasing your personal power. They were: 1. Practice 2. Patience 3. Persistence and 4. Positive Attitude. This month I want to add a fifth “P” to increase personal power. That P is Planning. I often eliminate planning because I have found that some people spend too much time planning and not enough time executing. But, after having a conversation with a number of you I decided that planning should be added to the list. Planning is important, as long as you are not planning when you should be executing. The key to successful planning is to plan both work and time. Since we are going to add planning to the list I want to provide you with some key concepts about planning. To improve your planning, ask six questions: 1. What results do I intend to achieve?
2. What must I do to get those results?
3. What are my priorities?
4. How much time will each activity take?
5. When will I do each activity?
6. How much flexibility must I allow for the unexpected?
The first three questions form a work plan. The last three questions make a time plan. For successful planning you need both. The key to a successful plan is to build flexibility into your plan. Plan, do, and review. Make your plan, execute your plan and review your plan to make sure it is working. |
