A
COMPLETE GUIDE TO SELLING BOOKS Foreword By Dan Poynter |

|
Writing the book is the easy part—the tip of the iceberg. A larger investment of time and money must be made once the manuscript is completed. Promotion is the part of the iceberg that is under the water. Many authors do not see the submerged part and do not even realize it is there. As an author, you have the responsibilities of a parent. Your book is a new member of your family. You are giving birth to it and now you must raise it. Books cannot flourish on their own. They need a lot of parental guidance and nurturing time. Fortunately, your book is not a 20-year commitment and you do not have to send it to college, but you do have to invest time and money to bring it up. It does not matter if you sell your manuscript to a publisher or publish yourself, the author must do the promotion. It is sad that authors must learn this over and over: publishers do not promote books. They get the books into stores and they list the books in their catalog, period. Authors must get the customers into the stores to pull the books through the system. So, whether you are an author-publisher or only an author, this book is for you. Linda has thoroughly researched your book promotion possibilities and recorded them here. Linda knows what she is talking about. Most important, as an author and publisher, she has been there. Watch your money. Do the free and inexpensive promotion first. Use email rather than envelopes/stamps, send copies to book reviewers, and stage local autographing/mini seminars. Make up your promotion plan, read this book, and fill in the plan. Prioritize the ideas, placing the most important ones first. Then work your way through the list. If you have a day job or some other activity to occupy part of your day, it will take you longer to get through the list. But you will be secure in the knowledge that you are doing all you can do to promote your book and that you are doing everything in the right order. Congratulations on your book and best wishes for sales success. Dan
