POSITIVE TALK... with Linda |

A New Year--A New You! It seems that it was only a few months ago I wrote an article entitled "How To Set and Achieve Goals" In fact, it was only a few months ago. January, 2000. And now here we are--January 2001. And, again we are talking about setting goals. But, I encourage you to go farther than just goal setting and focus on life goals. Do you know where you want to be five, ten, twenty years from now? Do you know where and how you want to live? Do you know how much money you want to earn and what kind of investments you want to make? Do you know what kind of people you want to be around and how you want to look and feel? Do you know how, when, and where you want to retire or if you want to retire? Do you know what kind of house you want to live in, what kind of car you want to drive, or the kind of neighborhood you want to live in? How financially secure do you want to be? What charities would you like to help? What organizations would you like to belong to? How would you help your family? Where would you attend church? How often will you exercise? What is your ideal weight? What do you want to accomplish before you die? If you knew you could not fail, what would you do? These questions may seem farfetched, but setting life goals can add excitement and joy to your life. Just imagine for a moment that all of the things on your list came true. What kind of life would you have? Using imagination and vision to set life goals can help you to see your future as you want it to be. Seeing your future as you want it to be can help motivate you to make it happen. Now that we have the vision how do we actually achieve our life's goals? Start by choosing one thing that is very important to you. Be specific. Set a realistic time for getting there. Then start working backward. What are all the intermediate steps you need to do to reach that goal. Set intermediate deadlines. For example: Goal # 1Intermediate step: What can I do by the end of next year? By the end of this year? Six months from now? By the end of this month? By end of this week? Tomorrow? Repeat this process for each goal you want to achieve. The most important part of this process is to begin. Every journey begins with the first step. I hope you can commit to the process. It’s a New Year, a New You, so go for the GOAL. |
