Developing
High Self Esteem
What is self-esteem? Self-esteem is self-confidence, self-worth and self- respect.
It is appreciating one's own worth and value, and respecting the worth and value
of others.
Self-esteem is a state of mind. It is the way you feel and think about
yourself and others; and it is measured by the way you act. Your self-esteem serves
as the bridge between who you are and what you do. It can be defined as your internal
belief system as well as how you experience life externally. Self-esteem effects
how we live our lives, conduct our relationships and the choices we make.
There
are many reasons for low self-esteem. Childhood experiences, criticism from adults
and/or peers, your environment, cultural background, or negative images from society
in general. If these negative feelings are reinforced by your own beliefs, low
self-esteem can become the norm for your life. When we adopt negative images of
ourselves as true, whether they are true or not, they effect how we feel about
ourselves. Unfortunately, too many people are overly critical of them selves,
and accept too readily the opinion of others about who they are.
If you want to
be happy and successful personally and professionally, you have to feel good about
yourself. People who feel good about them selves produce positive results. The
key to elevated self-esteem is the willingness to take responsibility for your
feelings, desires, thoughts, abilities and interests and to accept your overall
strengths and act accordingly. We all have weaknesses, but they do not have to
be the focus.
In order to maintain high self-esteem, we must believe in ourselves
and in our self-worth. Be able to see our place in the world realistically and
optimistically. Have confidence in our abilities to meet life's challenges. We
must have the ability to recognize our individual uniqueness and take pride in
that uniqueness and understand that we have value, regardless of the situation
or any specific performance. Remember when you love who you are loving others
will become easy.
