HOLIDAY STRESS BUSTERS
This is the time of the year when we seem to be short on
time, energy and money. It is an exciting time but it can also be very stressful.
Here are a few tips that can help you get control of your money, time, and emotions,
and enjoy a stress free holiday. After all this is the season to be jolly. So
eat, drink and be merry.
1. Start your gift shopping early or shop all year.
2. If you are a little short on cash make gifts. Visit an arts and crafts shop.
3. Give services as gifts. If you are good at something or have a skill you can share
make it a gift. Examples: bookkeeping, baking, repairs, gardening, house cleaning,
etc.
4. Give specialty books, tapes, seminars, etc.
5. Get family portraits framed
and have the frame engraved with a special message.
6. Special occasion cards,
calendars, plaques, poetry-an added touch is to make a tape recording dedicated
to the person you are giving it to.
7. Volunteer for or donate items to a homeless
shelter, battered women's shelters or some other organization that helps the less
fortunate.
8. Write love letters to the ones you love telling them how important
they are to you
9. Baby sit for a couple or single mom who never gets a break
10. Take care of someone's pet. You can pet sit or take them for a walk.
11. Instead
of buying everyone in the family a gift, have the family draw names and buy one
nice gift. Set a dollar limit on the cost.
12. Prepare the holiday meal yourself
or surprise her by doing it for or with her. Or have everyone bring a dish.
13. Offer to chauffeur someone around that cannot drive, do not have a car or do not
like to drive. Make yourself available to them over the holiday.
14. Tutor and/or
teach a skill that is needed such as computer, speaking, cooking, skating, dancing
or anything that would be appreciated by the recipient.
15. Provide a certificate
for a service. Examples: massage, facial, manicure/pedicure or housecleaning,
car wash, gardening etc.
The most important thing is to not get pressured into
spending money you don't have. Shop early and then don't go back to the stores
unless you have to. Make a list of everyone you are buying gifts for and make
a budget. If you absolutely cannot afford to buy a gift, say so. Most people feel
the same way you do about overspending for Christmas. Reduce the stress of the
season by enjoying it and remembering why we celebrate it in the first place.
